Vice Admiral DSP Varma is a former Director General of the Advanced Technology Vessel Programme (which produced India’s first nuclear submarine) and a former Chief of Material of the Indian Navy. He is a Post Graduate in Radar and Communications from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
Vice Admiral Varma has had an outstanding career spanning 45 years of varied experience in technology intensive fields. He was Instrumental in development & induction of several systems including cryptographic products on Navy platforms.
His important appointments have been the Director of Weapons Equipment/Systems at NHQ, Naval Attaché at the Indian Embassy (Paris), General Manager Naval Dockyard (Vizag), Director General Naval Projects (Mumbai), Assistant Chief of Materiel (IT & Systems) at NHQ, Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard (Mumbai) and the Program Director ATVP in the Dept of Defence R&D, prior to his taking over as the Chief of Material of the Indian Navy. On retirement from the Navy, he was appointed by the GOI to head the ATV Program as the Director General a post he held till December 2012.
During his long career he has been intensively associated with Naval Research, Industry, both Public and Private sector and has been instrumental in the design, development and induction of several indigenous systems on board Indian Navy ships and submarines.
During his illustrious career he has been decorated by the President of India for his distinguished and meritorious service with the ‘Param Vishist Seva Medal’, ‘Ati Vishist Seva Medal’ and the ‘Vishist Seva Medal’.
